The Family Cabin is different from other assets and must be addressed as such – it’s the one asset the family may want to use into perpetuity. Sentiments associated with Cabin memories often transform this real estate asset into an “heirloom.” However, crafting a transition plan without a family discussion with potential future owners can prove disastrous, if future owners are not given a chance to weigh in on interest, affordability, and other important issues. The importance of preserving family relationships after a loved one passes is (or should be) a goal for all families, further highlighting the importance of thoughtful cabin succession planning, and a plan that is coordinated with the owners’ overall estate plan.
